High energy, upbeat Latin and international music and rhythms, and lots of fun are offered by Zumba® instructor Del Herrera. She offers Zumba® and Zumba® Toning classes at the Oak Park Community Center and Gardens for teens ages 14 and over, adults, and seniors at all fitness levels.
Zumba® is a stylized exercise form that adapts dance rhythms for fitness. Dance rhythms used for typical classes include Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia, Bhangra, Swing, Tango, Reggaeton, Cha Cha, and Samba.
Zumba® Toning uses the same music and dance rhythms, but adds light weights to improve strength, toning, and cardio fitness.
The classes feature no floor work, just core work while standing. No expensive exercise clothing is needed, just wear comfortable attire and athletic shoes, and bring a small towel and a bottle or two of water. Classes can fit up to 30 people, so sign up with a friend and get fit together.
The great part about both Zumba® classes is that you get a full body workout. Herrera calls it “Exercise in disguise. The hour goes by so fast.”
Herrera has been teaching for more than 2 ½ years. She is a licensed Zumba® instructor, has her group exercise certificate from AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America), is CPR, AED, and First Aid certified, and is currently working on her personal trainer’s certification.
Her favorite part of teaching is seeing people who never thought they could dance or work out, find that they can do it. Students leave the class smiling and excited about coming back for the next class.
The challenging part for most people is letting go of their preconceived notions and letting their body move. After just a few weeks, Herrera finds that her students succeed beyond their expectations.
